Digital Scrapbooking

What is Digital Scrapbooking?WHO is 'the Digi-Scrapper'?WHY Digital Scrapbooking?versus PHOTO BOOKS

Photographs contain our most precious and irreplaceable memories. A scrapbooker captures and cradles these precious moments. (your grandparents’ wedding, your first born’s smile, a family Christmas…). As well as honouring our lives and the lives of those we love. Scrapbookers know the value of preserving our memories, allowing us to relive once-in-a-lifetime experiences. ~ Like an artist, a scrapbooker begins with a blank page. Onto the empty canvas, they lay their photos, memorabilia, stories and hearts…….

Scrapbooking hit our shores just over two decades ago.  Not long after that it became one of the most popular and fastest growing hobbies.  Enthusiasts rushed to their local craft shops to stock up on all the newest papers, stickers, tools & embellishments.  The versatility and personal nature of the hobby captured the interest of even those who claimed not to be interested in crafts, and who are apparently not creative at all.

Recently a new form of this addictive craft has been cropping up all over the internet. Digital scrapbooking is a fantastic fit for today’s fast-paced society – and its tools and techniques are easier, quicker and more economical to use than ever. Once you learn how to do it, it is fast, clean and “goof-proof!”. These qualities lead to one very important result …

You   Can   Actually   Complete   Your    Scrapbooks.

While digital scrapbooking will never be able to take the place of traditional scrapbooking – there is something quite appealing to the whole crop ‘n stick (“spoeg ‘n plak”) concept, and of course the social interaction with the ever popular “cropping-parties” – there certainly are many advantages, some of which are most tempting, to either swapping over to, or at the very least incorporating the digital aspect into this very addictive hobby.

Digital Scrapbooking, does however have a very definite place with the steady increasing popularity of coffee table style photo books. Digital Scrapbooking is the art of creating a scrapbook page using uploaded photos together with various digital effects. All the traditional techniques, tools and products are still used and applied, only digitally.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN

DIGITAL SCRAPBOOKING & PHOTO bOOKS?

A huge range of photo book software is available today.   Some are more user-friendly than others.  A fairly limited choice of templates and backgrounds are given onto which your un-manipulated photos are placed.  These software programs are ideal for the person who just wants to slap their photos onto a page, using a basic background, and maybe put a heading or two with a limited amount of journalling here and there.  In other words, inclusion of documentation, memorabilia, embellishments or freedom of design is seldom facilitated. These books are VERY quick and easy to complete (assuming the software is user-friendly).

Those who are passionate about scrapbooking or; who love the aesthetic appeal; and/or who enjoy putting their own personal touch to the page, will find these programs VERY limiting and frustrating.  And, there is no way of printing your pages yourself, saving them elsewhere on your computer, using them to e-mail etc.  You can ONLY have a photo book printed at the store that provided the software.

While we ultimately want to print our masterpieces into a coffee table type photo book, and therefore are in dire need of this service,  it is however an insult to all avid scrapbookers to refer to this simple and uncreative copy-n-paste  technique as Digital Scrapbooking.
